Pigging out for Habitat

ON SATURDAY (AUGUST 23) THE EFFINGHAM COUNTY HABITAT HELD THEIR SANCTIONED BBQ COOK-OFF TO RAISE MONEY FOR THEIR CHAPTER. HERE ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS.

  •
This was the first year for the event which proved to be a huge success.
  •
Some came for the food....some came to make sure taxes were being collected!
  •
  •
  •
During the event we saw several WTOC personalities...such as 98.7 The River's Big John Wetherbee who was stopped constantly by folks who wanted to know "is it gonna rain?"
  •
Mike Cihla showed up just to see if anyone would recognize him.
  •
And Jody Chapin showed up just make sure we all behaved.
  •
12 teams showed up to submit their barbecue creations for the sanctioned cook-off and the cash prizes.
  •
First place: $400, Second place: $300, Third Place $200...and the grand prize winner picked up an additional $500.
  •
  •
  •
Here we see the judges getting serious about sampling the food.
  •
It's a tough job knowing the decisions about to be made rest in your hands. Or taste buds.
  •
  •
    But we had fun.
  •
  •
Just some friends who wanted to say hi.
  •
The kids had plenty to do...climbing...
  •
    ...or just hanging around.
  •
Stuff that grown-ups don't have the stomach to do.
  •
While the event was going on, volunteers from the Effingham County Habitat were busy building a shed.
  •
They started at the crack of dawn...
  •
...and worked until the event concluded at 5pm.
  •
    The shed was then donated
  •
    to the Effingham County Fairgrounds
  •
as a way of saying "thanks."
  •
  •
    A snow cone...
  •
...just the thing for a hot summer's day.
  •
And everyone left happy. Including Mike who got the T-shirt he came for.
